History Made: First Pakistani American, Hanadi Nadeem, and First Indian American, Tina Talim, Elected to the NV State Legislature and Clark County District Court, Respectively
Two trailblazing victories! Hanadi Nadeem’s election to the Nevada State Legislature as the first Pakistani American and Tina Talim’s election as the District Court Judge as the first Indian American are monumental milestones. These victories represent Nadeem’s and Talim’s professional achievements and broader progress in diversifying the political and judicial landscape.
For Hanadi Nadeem, entering the state legislature could mean advocating for policies that resonate with the growing South Asian and broader immigrant communities. At the same time, Tina Talim’s appointment to the district court is a decisive step toward increased representation in the judicial system, where diversity is often underrepresented.
First-time candidate Hanadi Nadeem had a strong foundation for her first campaign, particularly with the backing of the Democratic Caucus and key elected officials. With her focus on core issues like education, healthcare, and affordable housing, she resonated with many voters who are concerned about these areas. Hanadi had previously been involved in many political campaigns as a supporter and volunteer; she understood the electoral process and what it takes to run a campaign. With no primary challenger, she focused on her resources and efforts more on the general election. Hanadi’s access to Democratic campaign logistics, including resources and expertise, gave her an edge in strategy, fundraising, and outreach.
“I am honored that the residents of Assembly District put their trust in me to represent them in Carson City,” said the newly elected legislator, Hanadi Nadeem. She continued, “I have raised my family here. I have been a resident of my Assembly District for many years and met some of the nicest Las Vegans, and I assure them that I will work hard for the issues that matter the most to all.”
Tina Talim made history by becoming the first elected Indian-American to serve as the Clark County District Court Judge. Among the races this election cycle, Talim won by the widest margin compared to other competitive races, suggesting her message and strategy connected with the electorate.
Judge Tina Talim has a strong foundation in law enforcement, and her legal career has given her a good base of support for her District Court position. Being appointed by Governor Joe Lombardo and then having to run for election in the same cycle was a monumental task for Talim. Talim built a robust campaign infrastructure on the campaign trail by quickly raising over $300,000 and building a broad coalition of voters, from the legal community to local organizations.
“With over a half a million votes, I am honored and humbled by the trust that the people of Clark County have shown through this decisive victory, affirming my role as Nevada’s first Indian-American judge. After a 20-year career as an attorney, this moment is not just a personal milestone but a shared achievement for the rich and diverse communities of our great state,” said Judge Talim. “To everyone who stood by my side, believed in me, and helped make history – thank you. I will continue to put public safety first and ensure justice is served fairly and impartially. I am honored to continue to serve as your District Court Department 14 judge.”
