Shipra De to receive Regent Scholar Award by the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education

NLV Senior Ms. Shipra De is a student in the Honors College and is pursuing triple degrees in Economics, Mathematics and Computer Science. She is well-known among the faculty as a student motivated, curious, and interested in learning.

Dr. Bradley Wimmer, Associate Professor of Economics, ranks Shipra as the top undergraduate student he has taught in his 12 years at UNLV. As an undergraduate when she asked to audit a graduate-level seminar he agreed and found her to be “always the best-prepared student, often leading the class discussion.” She recently completed an independent study with him and he expects that she will produce an honors thesis that will result in publication in a professional journal. This is not new to Shipra as she already has one professional publication to her credit.

In her mathematics studies and participation in an undergraduate research program through the National Science Foundation, Shipra’s work led to a publication in Ars Combinatora in 2009. Her love of learning extends outward to the work she engages in the community; many times leading these efforts. She has been a student ambassador, sat on various student governing bodies, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Boys and Girls Club. In her own words she states, “I am a strong proponent of community service both for the pleasure of helping others and for the perspective and humility it teaches.”

Shipra will graduate in May 2011 with approximately 200 credits and has been offered a job with JT3, a defense department contractor, whom she has interned with the last three summers.
Shipra is a daughter of Gopal and Geeta De. In 2006 Shipra graduated from the Green Valley High School as a Valedictorian and was named the Presidential Scholar.  In 2010, Shipra was selected from more than 1,100 engineering, math, and science undergraduate students to receive a 2010 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and $7,500 toward her undergraduate education.

An Honors College student, De is involved in the UNLV honor society Phi Kappa Phi, engineering college activities, and UNLV Honors Student Council. Shipra was nominated by Dr. Peter Starkweather, Dean, Honors College, UNLV.
