Former Las Vegan Neil Gupta travels the world to fight diseases
Neil Gupta, a graduate of Valley High School, is a medical epidemiologist for the CDC in Atlanta.
While Americans grappled with newfound fears of a disease they thought was confined mostly to developing countries, Dr. Neil Gupta was in the thick of the outbreak, serving in Liberia with a team from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that was working to help the health care system there stem the country’s Ebola outbreak.
Based at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta, much of Gupta’s job involves devising and then helping to put into practice protocols aimed at preventing the spread of disease, sometimes in hospital and health care settings and anyplace in the world where the CDC’s assistance is requested.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cell biology from the University of California, Berkeley, Gupta earned his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine. During his internal medicine residency, Gupta began to learn about the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service and was intrigued by the idea of practicing medicine from “a systems perspective” rather than the more common one-to-one, doctor-patient perspective.
