One APIA Nevada Celebrates Diwali with Assemblymembers D’Silva and Nadeem Highlighting Civic Representation and Affordable Healthcare Ahead of 2026 Elections
One APIA Nevada hosted Festival of Lights: Power of Insight, bringing together community members, legislators, and local leaders for an evening that celebrated culture, public service, and representation ahead of the 2026 elections. The program reflected the spirit of Diwali and Nevada’s growing commitment to civic participation, highlighting how cultural identity and collective action strengthen democracy.

Featured speakers included Assemblymember Reuben D’Silva (District 28), the first South Asian elected to office in Nevada, and Assemblymember Hanadi Nadeem (District 34), the first Muslim woman in the Nevada Legislature. Both highlighted how participation at the local level can lead to broader representation across all levels of government.
“Events like this remind us that culture and civic life are deeply connected,” said Medinah Yusufzai, South Asian Community Organizer at One APIA Nevada. “When people come together to celebrate identity and stay informed, it strengthens our democracy and ensures every voice is heard.”

Community members had the chance to speak directly with legislators about pressing issues, including the recent government shutdown, the suspension of federal SNAP benefits, and the fight for accessible healthcare. Conversation centered on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the enhanced premium tax credits, which are set to expire at the end of 2025 unless Congress votes to extend them in early December. With some lawmakers seeking to scale back or eliminate these credits, millions of Americans could face steep premium increases or lose coverage entirely if Congress fails to act. The discussion also highlighted the broader national need for policies that expand, rather than restrict, access to affordable, quality care for all.
The gathering also came just days after several Asian American candidates made history in local elections across the country, reflecting a growing national movement toward inclusive leadership. Building on that momentum, the program underscored the stakes of civic engagement in a shifting political climate, emphasizing that democracy depends on every community being seen, heard, and represented in the decisions that shape the nation’s future.
