Clark County Commission Seeks Members for the Asian Americans for the Asian-American Pacific Islanders Community Commission

To engage and connect with the growing and prosperous Asian community in Southern Nevada, County Commissioner Tick Segerblom has initiated a concerted outreach effort to connect with the Asian community.

In the last Clark County Board of Commissioners meeting, the Board has approved a formation of Asian American Pacific Islanders Community Commission.  The commission will have 15 members from diverse Asian community who must be a resident of the Clark County.  The Board will appoint one member to serve as the Chairman and one member to serve as Vice-Chairman. 

The purpose of the Commission is to research and describe the history of the communities, as well as, identify the social and economic needs specific to these diverse Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) communities. The Commission will have the ability to accept donations as authorized by the Board of County Commissioners to meet research needs, host a resource conference, and conduct a feasibility study regarding the development of a cultural center.   The Commission will identify the various Asian American communities, the population of each community along with the history of each community in vibrant and growing Clark County.

Largest AAPI ethnic groups in Nevada include: Filipino (162,936), Chinese (50,878), Japanese (26,359), Korean (16,169), Vietnamese (16,169), and Indian (15,022). From 2010 to 2016, the number of eligible AAPI voters in Nevada grew 35%. This compares to a 13% growth rate for the statewide eligible voting population between 2010 to 2016. As per the official estimates, 10% of the Clark County population is Asian American Pacific Islanders.  More than half of all eligible AAPI voters (61%) in Nevada live in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas.

The Board is soliciting applicants to serve on the newly formed Asian American Pacific Islanders Community Commission.  If you’re interested in serving on behalf of the Indian/South Asians, you can apply via a formal application process.  Members will be selected and appointed by the County Commissioners for a two year term beginning July 1st2019.  

The deadline to apply is August 7th 2019, 5:00 PM.
