Election 2024 – South Asian Candidates Raised Over $59,000 During the First Quarter

With the 2024 campaign season in full swing, declared candidates were busy raising funds for their upcoming elections. The 2024 election cycle has attracted five South Asian candidates with diverse professional backgrounds seeking elected office. Long-time residents and active community members, candidates Sharifa Wahab, Nadeem Hanadi, and Devender Singh, are the first-timers declaring their political candidacy. In contrast, Syed Zaidi ran multiple times but couldn’t secure victory. Democrat Mumbai-born Reuben D’Silva is the only South Asian incumbent running unopposed.

Sharifa Wahab, a candidate for the Nevada State Assembly District 35, raised over $29,000, of which $4,200 is in-kind donation for food and marked as a loan from Sharifa to the campaign. Significant donors to Wahab’s include a $10,000 donation from the Committee to Elect Roberta Lange and $7,000 in contributions from campaign funds from other Democratic elected leaders. Political activist and former Vice Chair of the Clark County Democratic Party Fayyaz Raja donated $1,000 to Wahab’s campaign. 

Candidate for Assembly District 34, Nadeem Hanadi, raised $14,855 and spent under $200 during the first reporting period of this election season. Hanadi’s noteworthy donors include $5,000 from Drs. Shamim and Nafees Nagy, and $1,000 from Dr. Zia Khan. Additionally, Hanadi received $7,000 in contributions from other Democratic elected leaders $4000. 

Assembly candidate Syed Zaidi for District 42 did not raise funds and showed $100 in expenses to pay for the application to file his candidacy for the State Assembly District 42.

Clark County School Board candidate Devendra Singh reports $10,000 in multiple small donations of $100 or less. 

Representing District 28, State legislator Reuben D’Silva raised over $14,000 during the first reporting period while spending over $8,000 on campaign-related expenses. Incumbent D’Silva has over $59,000 in bank. Clark County Education Association donated $10,000 to the campaign, while other donations came from grassroots donors and supporters of D’Silva.
