NV State Board of Medical Examiners Investigates Dr. Rashid Jahangir, M.D.

The Investigative Committee of the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners filed a formal Complaint against Rashid Jahangir, M.D., alleging two Nevada Medical Practice Act violations. The alleged charges include Malpractice and a Failure to Maintain Accurate and Complete Medical Records.
Per the investigative charges, a patient was admitted to Sunrise Hospital and diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia and acute respiratory failure. After staying for several days in the hospital, medical professionals determined the patient should receive a tracheostomy and a percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy (PEG) tube. Dr. Jahangir was the anesthesiologist for the patient’s PEG tube placement.
Per the standard procedures, the anesthesiologist is responsible for assessing the patient’s health by performing a physical examination and obtaining a medical history to formulate a safe and effective anesthesia plan. As per the report, Dr. Jahangir failed to document that he conducted a physical examination of the patient prior to initiating her anesthetic care.
Additionally, it is alleged Dr. Jahangir failed to document that he prepared to properly manage her difficult airway or pursuing opportunities to deliver supplemental oxygen throughout the procedure. Dr. Jahangir’s first attempt at performing a tracheostomy on a patient failed during the procedure. During the second tracheostomy attempt, the patient suffered anoxic brain injury. In his anesthesia procedure record, Dr. Jahangir failed to document his management of the patient’s airway during the tracheostomy attempts.
Dr. Jahangir is a graduate of Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan. Jahangir completed his medical internship at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio. He continued his advanced medical residency at Medical College of Ohio, Toledo, Ohio, followed by a fellowship in Anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.
