Upcoming Elections – Four “Unknown” Indian-Americans Running for an Elected Offices

The filing period for the upcoming election ended on Friday, March 16, 2018, and surprisingly four Indian Americans have filed for four elected offices, two for the statewide races and two for the regional/local offices.

With growing community and intense political climate, the four Indian American vying for numerous offices are Mahendra Sujeet “Bobby” running as a Democrat for the United States Senate (6-year term); Reuben D’Silva running as a Democrat for the Congressional Representative from District 1 (2-year term); Asheesh Dewan is running as a Democrat for the Nevada State Governor (4-year term); and T. Rao Coca is seeking a 6-year term as a Regent for the State University from District 12.

Reuben D’Silva (D), somewhat known in the political community, is running against an incumbent Congresswoman Dina Titus. Reuben has been attending many local community events and has a good group of dedicated volunteers campaigning for him.  As per Reuben’s website, Reuben was born in Mumbai, India. Until the late 1990’s, he and his family lived as undocumented immigrants. He attended Rancho High School where he served as Senior Class President and graduated in 2003. He then attended the College of Southern Nevada (then Community College of Southern Nevada) and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He later transferred to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He graduated from Yale and turned down several lucrative job opportunities so he could return to Las Vegas and teach History at his alma mater, Rancho High School, feeling it was the right thing to do.

Other candidates, Mahendra Sujeet “Bobby”, Asheesh Dewan, and T. Rao Coca are not known in the local political community.

Mahendra Sujeet “Bobby” and Reuben D’Silva have their websites up and running, outlining their election platform and other pertinent information. There is no political information available for Asheesh and T. Rao Coca.

Asheesh is a local Physician and a graduate of St. Georges University, Granada, West Indies.  Asheesh completed his internship and residency in Pediatrics from University of Oklahoma and Fellowship from the University of California San Diego.

T Rao Coca is a retired IBM, Nvidia and IGT executive and an Intellectual Property consultant and Patent Licensing Expert.  Rao is a regular contributor to the Las Vegas Business Press and writes on diverse business issues.  Rao is a graduate of Temple University with JD, Ph.D., and Masters in Solid State Physics.

Early voting for the Primaries is from May 26th through June 8th, 2018, with election date is June 12th, 2018.  The winners will move on to the general election on November 6th, 2018.  Nevada is a closed Primary State.
