#VegasStrong – Indian Sikh Community Holds Candlelight Vigil & Shradhanjli Prayers at the Mandir Along with a Fund Raiser

On October 1st Las Vegas saw the most deplorable mass shooting in the history of America with 58 died and over five hundred injured.  The local Las Vegas Indian community led by Guru Nanak Gurdwara held a candlelight vigil with over 250 members of the Sikh community in attendance.  Gurdwara priest Bhai Randhir Singh Ji led the attendees to the prayer meeting in honor of the victims of the October 1st mass shooting and honored the first responders for their swift response to the tragedy.  The vigil began with prayers in the Gurdwara parking lot followed by children in attendance alighting 58 candles, one for each of the victim of the tragedy. Later all the attendees lit candles in memory of those who died during the tragic event and prayed for the speedy recovery of those who were recuperating at the local area hospitals.  Gurdwara announced raising $7,000 for the victims of Sunday carnage. The vigil was also attended by the members of the local Interfaith Council of Southern Nevada.  Teji Malik, a member of the Interfaith Council said, “our prayers with the victims especially with the relatives and friends of the victims who are here.  We all fall as human buy Sikhi teaches us to quickly get up, dust off and carry with the lives”.  Teji was joined by Executive Director of the Council, Marvin Gawryn and Keith Thomas from the Church of the Jesus Christ.

Hindu Mandir conducted shradhanjli prayers, organized by Panditji Brijesh on Sunday, October 8th, in memory of the victims.  It was an embarrassing situation as less than 50 members of the community showed up for such a life-changing event.

Las Vegas chapter of NAPI – Nevada Association of Physicians of Indian Origin chapter President Dhaval Shah has informed vegasdesi of NAPI donating Ten Thousand Dollars to the victims’ funds.  NAPI is also planning to set up a blood donation camp in the near future.  Indian restaurants, Mint India and Urban Turban were busy during the week with providing food for the first responders and to the victim families.
