Is Kamala going to be Obama 2.0 or Hillary 2.0? – Guest Author Nirmalya Chatterjee
Many political pandits are pondering over this question. Time will obviously get us the answer. Maybe we are getting some early indications.
Kamala, like Obama, is clearly very charismatic. She projects a lot of energy and confidence. People are energized since she came into the top of the ticket. Her messages are very clear and hits you on your face. ‘How dare they take away our rights?’. ‘We are not going back.’ ‘You fight. You win’. Being abandoned by her father at an early age, just like Obama, Kamala has built a fighter’s strength and confidence. Obama played up his message of HOPE. Kamala’s is playing up her message of FREEDOM.
Like Hillary, Kamala is trying to be the first female President. If it wasn’t for the electoral votes, Hillary indeed would have become the first female President. Both are fighting the same rival – Donald J Trump. Both are enduring Trump’s insults. Both are having to defend their incumbencies – Hillary defending Obama’s legacies and Kamala defending Biden’s.
It is obviously too early to make any conclusion. But it seems to me that Trump has been caught a bit off-guard with Kamala’s aggressive approach. She is telling the voters that as a prosecutor ‘ I have dealt with Donald Trump’s type.’ The voters love it. On the other hand, Trump had his supporters screaming at Hillary – ‘Lock her up’. Quite a difference. The table seems to have turned. We will see how it plays out.

VP Harris website has no agenda listed, yet Mr. Chatterjee feels “her message is clear”
DNC Had several chants of Lock HIM up
Trump Has always said he could have charged Hillary for several crimes but choose not to do it to a first lady, unlike democrats with their phony charges.
Lying seems to come naturally to Democrats.
Kamala will be Kamala 1.0, and not follow in any one’s foot steps. She has intelligence of Indians and aggressiveness of African-American women. All supporters of the the liar, cheater, crook, and criminal Trump, should be afraid of the coming dark days for them.
Let’s take a moment to delve into the political history of both major U.S. parties and how their policies have impacted India and Indian immigrants. While many Indian Americans tend to support the Democratic Party, it’s important to look at the historical relationship between both parties and India before forming an opinion. A closer examination reveals that Democrats have not always been pro-India, whereas Republicans have often shown a stronger alignment with Indian interests.
Historical Relations with India: Democrats vs. Republicans:
When we examine the history, it becomes clear that the Democratic Party has not always acted in India’s favor. Many of the sanctions imposed on India came during Democratic administrations. A key example is the 1998 sanctions following India’s nuclear tests, imposed by the Clinton administration. These sanctions severely affected India’s economy and global standing. In contrast, it was a Republican president, George W. Bush, who took significant steps to improve U.S.-India relations, most notably through the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement. This deal was a turning point, fostering economic cooperation, technological exchange, and defense collaboration between the two nations.
Republican administrations have consistently shown stronger support for India’s strategic and economic growth. President Donald Trump, for example, strengthened defense ties with India, supported India’s position in the Indo-Pacific region, and even recognized India’s concerns on global platforms. Under Republican leadership, the U.S. has often recognized India’s global significance, whereas Democratic policies in the past have leaned toward supporting Pakistan and other nations that were not always aligned with India’s interests.
Immigration Policies and Indian Immigrants:
Most Indian Americans come to the United States through legal means, primarily through education or employment-based visas. However, the Democratic Party has historically prioritized policies aimed at providing a path for undocumented immigrants, often sidelining the needs of legal immigrants like Indians. During the Obama administration, for instance, immigration reform largely focused on illegal immigration, while the backlog for Indian green cards continued to grow.
On the other hand, Republican administrations have focused on supporting legal immigration. The Trump administration, for example, pushed for reforms to streamline legal immigration, especially for high-skilled workers from countries like India. Trump’s focus on merit-based immigration was a step in the right direction for Indian professionals, many of whom wait years to obtain green cards. In fact, during Republican administrations, the backlog for Indian green cards tends to reduce, as more attention is given to legal immigrants over illegal ones.
It is under Democratic administrations, including the current Biden administration, that the backlog for Indian green cards has grown dramatically, largely due to the focus on undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers. This directly affects Indian families and professionals who follow the legal process and still face long wait times for permanent residency.
Republicans are Pro-India and Pro-Legal Immigration:
The Republican Party has a clear track record of supporting policies that benefit India and legal Indian immigrants. From promoting U.S.-India defense partnerships to advocating for fair and merit-based immigration policies, Republicans have shown a commitment to strengthening ties with India and helping Indian professionals and families in the U.S. Democrats, by contrast, have often focused more on policies that favor undocumented immigrants, leaving legal immigrants—especially from India—stuck in bureaucratic red tape and prolonged waiting periods for green cards.
Rethinking Political Support:
Given the facts, Indian Americans should carefully consider supporting the Republican Party, which has consistently been more pro-India and pro-legal immigration. Republicans have worked to strengthen U.S.-India relations, reduce green card backlogs for Indian immigrants, and promote policies that benefit Indian professionals and families. In contrast, Democrats have historically imposed sanctions on India and focused more on illegal immigration, which negatively impacts legal immigrants from India.
The time has come for Indian Americans to rethink their political support. By backing the Republican Party, Indian Americans can align themselves with a party that respects legal immigration, strengthens U.S.-India relations, and prioritizes policies that benefit both India and Indian communities in the United States.
Indian Americans are well informed people. To them, elections are more about the policies and who will execute them. That is more important to them than the party branding. That is my short reply. I will be happy to lay out a side by side comparison of the respective policies and the candidates as I see them at a later time. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your perspective. I agree that for many Indian Americans, policies and effective execution are key considerations in elections, often taking precedence over party affiliation. I believe the Republican Party has consistently offered strong policies that support legal immigration and maintain strong ties with India. It would be great if you could provide a detailed side-by-side comparison of the policies and candidates at a later time, and I would suggest including a comparison on legal immigration and ties with India.
If you are a citizen of the USA, and so eligible to vote, you are an American. We need to stop being India-centric, and vote for America’s better future.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. While I absolutely agree that, as U.S. citizens, our primary responsibility is to care about and vote for the future of the United States, I also believe it’s natural for immigrants like us to still have a connection to our homeland. We may have immigrated from India, but that doesn’t diminish our commitment to the U.S. In fact, many immigrants bring a unique perspective that can enrich the fabric of American society. Caring about the U.S. and being invested in its future doesn’t mean we have to completely set aside our roots or cultural heritage. Both can coexist. After all, many of the values and traditions we bring from India, such as family, education, and hard work, are aligned with the ideals that make the U.S. strong. As responsible American citizens, we are committed to contributing to the betterment of the U.S., while also maintaining a connection to our heritage, which helps shape who we are today. Our love for the U.S. and its future is unquestionable, but acknowledging our background only strengthens the diversity and inclusivity that the U.S. is built upon.
