On the auspicious occasion of Diwali celebrations in 2024, Nevada State Legislator Reuben D’Silva announced plans to introduce a groundbreaking religious holiday bill.

D’Silva’s bill is scheduled for a public hearing on Thursday, February 27^th at 8 AM at NV State Legislative Building, 7120 Amigo Street, Las Vegas. The committee meeting will also be video conferenced from the legislative building. 

It is imperative for the South Asian community religious leaders, including the officers and board members of numerous religious institutions, to come forward and speak in support of making Diwali, Eid, Vaisakhi, and Vesak days in the State of Nevada.

The legislation, Assembly Bill 82, is aimed to recognize South-Asian religious holidays celebrated by burgeoning Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Buddhist communities. This bill requires the Governor to annually proclaim certain days to be “Diwali Day,” “Eid al-Fitr Day,” “Vaisakhi Day” and “Vesak Day” in the State of Nevada.

As the only Indian-American elected official in the NV State legislature, Assemblyman Reuben D’Silva has been a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusivity in Nevada. This bill marks a significant step toward promoting cultural understanding and acknowledging the religious and spiritual contributions of the South-Asian community in Nevada.
