Obituary – Fayyaz Raja: 1951-2025

Longtime resident and social and political activist Fayyaz Raja passed away on Friday, June 6th, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and community engagement that touched the lives of many.
At the age of 21, Raja embarked on a journey that took him from his early years in Pakistan to Abu Dhabi and Bahrain and ultimately to the United States in 1979, where he pursued higher education at Cornell University. A year later, he moved to Las Vegas and enrolled in the Hospitality Management Program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).
Raja built a successful career in the hospitality industry, working for more than two decades at several of the most iconic resorts on the Las Vegas Strip, including MGM and Monte Carlo (now Park MGM). After a long and accomplished tenure in hospitality, he transitioned to a new chapter as an independent insurance broker.
Raja was much more than his professional achievements. He was a dedicated community leader who believed deeply in giving back. He became an active figure in local politics, advocating for progressive values and inclusive representation. His commitment led him to serve as Vice Chair of the Clark County Democratic Party, where he worked tirelessly to support strong candidates and foster civic engagement across party lines.
In late April, Raja fell suddenly ill and was admitted to a local hospital. As his condition became more complex, he was transferred to the UCLA Medical Center, where he initially showed signs of improvement. However, he soon developed further complications and was placed on a ventilator, from which he was unable to recover.
A proud Muslim, Raja was also a devoted member of the local Islamic community. As an executive board member of Masjid Tawheed, he played a crucial role in guiding and supporting the growing Muslim community in Las Vegas.
“Raja was a true champion for the public good. He was a powerful advocate for public education, democratic engagement, societal betterment, and community empowerment,” said Indian-American NV State Assemblymember Reuben D’Silva.
Raja will be remembered for his integrity, generosity, and unwavering commitment to the people and causes he cared about. His contributions to the Las Vegas community and beyond will not be forgotten. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew him.
May he rest in eternal peace.

Fayyaz raja was one of the nicest persons I have met here in Vegas. He was always very warm, energetic and respectful wherever I met him. He is going to be sorely missed in our community. May his soul rest in peace.
