ATTORNEY PAUL PADDA WINS MEDICAL MALPRACTICE CASE AGAINST SUMMERLIN HOSPITAL WITH $5.7 MILLION JURY VERDICT
Prominent attorney Paul S. Padda recently obtained a nearly $5.7 million verdict from a Clark County, Nevada jury against Summerlin Hospital in a medical malpractice case alleging the wrongful death of a 44-year old woman named Angie Wu.
According to court filings and trial testimony, Padda’s client experienced a massive bleed in her home within approximately 10-hours following her discharge from Summerlin Hospital. The bleed ultimately led to her death. Padda alleged that the discharge was premature and, therefore, unsafe because his client had a major glossectomy surgery 3-days earlier from which she had not started the proper healing process. At trial, Summerlin Hospital argued that the bleed was not predictable and that there was no guarantee that the patient would be safer in the hospital than at home.
“That was a ridiculous argument and thankfully the jury understood it to be a ridiculous argument” stated Padda. According to Padda, “people put their trust in hospitals to act with safety in mind and, in this case, that trust was violated.” The case was especially tragic because Ms. Wu, a single mother, had a 16-year-old son who was left to provide for himself following his mother’s death. “He is the real hero in this case” stated Padda.
The trial, which lasted approximately one month, involved detailed medical testimony from a number of medical experts and other witnesses. Paul Padda, who was the lead trial attorney on the case, along with his co-counsel Shirley Blazich, delivered a very powerful closing argument that visibly moved some jurors to tears. A former federal prosecutor, Padda has had major trial success since leaving the United States Department of Justice and forming his own law firm, which has its main office in Las Vegas and has recently expanded to Chicago.
