Paycheck Protection Program resumed. Top Recipients include many prominent Physicians from the First PPP Draw. Check Out Who Got How Much

Small Business Administration (SBA), in consultation with the U.S. Treasury Department, reopened the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) for PPP Loans. SBA is currently accepting Second Draw PPP loan applications from participating lenders. At least $25 billion is being set aside for Second Draw PPP Loans to eligible borrowers with a maximum of 10 employees or for loans of $250,000 or less to eligible borrowers in low or moderate-income neighborhoods.

A borrower is generally eligible for a Second Draw PPP Loan if the borrower:

  • Previously received a First Draw PPP Loan and will or has used the full amount only for authorized uses
  • Has no more than 300 employees; and
  • Can demonstrate at least a 25% reduction in gross receipts between comparable quarters in 2019 and 2020

Many local Indian/South Asian American businesses were the beneficiary of the first draw Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). Physicians from the Indian community were the major beneficiaries from the first draw PPP while other small businesses – Indian restaurants, convenience stores, and numerous family-owned small businesses received much smaller amount as the program was based on the number of employees retained by the recipient business.

First Draw PPP Loans made to eligible borrowers qualify for full loan forgiveness if during the 8- to 24-week covered period following loan disbursement, the employee and compensation levels are maintained; the loan proceeds are spent on payroll costs and other eligible expenses, and at least 60 percent of the proceeds are spent on payroll costs.

More than forty-five thousand Nevada businesses applied for the PPP Loan. Nevada businesses received over $4 Billion in loans to meet the payroll, an average of $92,889 per applicant. Over $20 million was received in $150,000 or more per recipient by the Las Vegas-based 50 Indian American businesses with a net impact of saving over 2,400 jobs. Several business owners received multiple funding from the PPP as they have multiple businesses under different corporate names. Recipients under $150,000 are not listed.

Below is a list of the Las Vegas-based Indian (including South Asian) American businesses receiving up to $150,000 during the first PPP draw loans. The top of the list is Nevada Heart & Vascular Center with over $1.7 million in PPP loan, second on the list is Indo Cal Foods, a Jack in the Box franchisee owned by Jyoti Madhura & partners received over $1.18 million, followed by many prominent local Indian community Physicians group.

Cal Foods retained over 355 employees during the beginning of the pandemic. Deepak Shroff’s Great Clips received close to $500,000 retaining 119 employees. Non-medical recipients include a law firm, educational service firm, investment banking company, and a restaurant.

Over $20 million was received in $150,000 or more by the Las Vegas-based 50 Indian American businesses with a net impact of saving more than 2,400 jobs.

The smallest PPP Loan amount of $1,275 went to Nikhil Patel of Patel Bookkeeping Service. Hindu Mandir received $13,600 while Guru Nanak Gurdwara’s PPP Loan was $7,748.

PPP loans: Free money . Ideally if your practice is closed and paying employees – should be eligible. But keeping it open and making money and asking money – because it is available is UNETHICAL and taking advantage of system while depriving needy small businesses. We should publish the names of Honest Physicians who refused PPP because 1. They have accumulated enough from Medicare and insurance s over the years , to support their employees. 2. Consciously preferred someone else to take the money in real need.

It also bring a larger question: i These bussiness people – with freedom of billing ( whether insurance or cash )in their practice
must have been exploiting for long time of practice.

  2. Juggu Buggu Singh says:

Well this is about the most idiotic thing I’ve read today. While the title targets physicians the writer of this article also took part in accepting over 300k with his affiliation to Paul Padda Law. What a joke!

    • peter says:

      Jaggu,Banguand PAPPU;
      PAPPU JI ,
THE FACT PAUL PADDA IS IN THE LIST – IS NOT OMITTED FROM THE LIST , MUST BE CONGRATULATED FOR SWADEEP PROFESSIONAL INTEGRETY. HIS EMPLOYER GOT IST AND NOT SWADEEP ( BOTH ARE DIFFERENT — )

  3. Singh says:

About your comment above I presumed you’re a Physician and not revealing your true identity. Please don’t hide behind the clownish name Juggu Buggu Singh. You may be on the list with a big PPP Loan and don’t want the readers to know about it. I have known Swadeep, editor of vegasdesi, for over twenty years. He has professional mannerism when it comes to reporting and since the launch of vegasdesi has reported the news within the community without any prejudice.

Nothing in this article is demeaning or putting anyone down. The above article is not targeted towards Physicians or anyone else in the community. Physicians just happened to be employers who saved thousands of jobs and in return received a majority of the PPP Loan money within the Indian business community. The article clearly says that many small local Indian community-owned businesses got the loan as well – from smoke shops, convenience stores, places of worship to a bookkeeper. You should thank the editor for disclosing his employer in maintaining the high ethical standards, integrity, and without any bias on this informational site.

  4. nio says:

The feds will be looking into all of these businesses real soon on the PPP disbursements. They already have been notified of this nonsense. Let’s see who needs a lawyer soon.

  5. peter says:

PPP money must go to Employees so employees donot have to seek for un employment. Employee seeking unemployment and business getting PPP is a BIG issue including imprisonment. While paying/non paying employees and practicing /sending invoices for medical billing such as Medicare will be considered as double dipping. Those who went for free money is on record and will go against as and when time will come. Free is never free .

  6. Desiameri says:

A quote from the article; “Over $20 million was received in $150,000 or more by the Las Vegas-based 50 Indian American businesses with a net impact of saving more than 2,400 jobs.
Seriously? Does it mean the recipient had laid off all the employees and closed down their businesses/practices without the PPP money? In fact, none of the doctors would have laid off anyone. So that is where the unethical behavior or conduct is evident. Greed!
