Sulekh Jain in the Forefront of Establishing Chair Professorships in Jainism Across Higher Education Institutions Around the World

Las Vegas, Sulekh Jain, Ph.D., a retired engineering conglomerate General Electric engineer, has dedicated his post-professional life to raising the copious amount to educate the new generation about Jainism. Jain is relentless in pursuing with some of the elite higher education institutions in creating endowed Professorships in Jainism with donations from the Jain community members across the United States.

As a President of the Jain Academic Foundation of North America – JAFNA, Sulekh Jain and his executive team have raised millions of dollars to fund academic programs in nearly 50 universities in the United States and Canada. Some of these endowed professorships are combined with Hinduism studies. JAFNA, under the direction of its dedicated board, has taken Jain education by establishing liberal endowments at universities in England, Belgium, Israel, and India. As per Sulekh Jain, Jain studies are also offered in Germany, Brazil, and Pakistan.

The funding of Jainism academic programs is instrumental in creating academic chairs, academic professorships, and academic fellowships in many well-known universities in the United States and abroad. JAFNA has invested in academic excellence by creating an innovative and intellectual curriculum focusing on and advancing the teachings of Jainism.

“We are currently working with Georgia College State University (GCSU), the University of Chicago, Claremont School of Theology (CST), and Florida Atlantic University also for new Jain Study Programs. We are already in talks with the Philippines (Manila) and a few other places,” said Sulekh Jain.

The University of Birmingham is the newest University to start the academic program in Jainism, which will open for enrollment from January 2023. Rolling out from September 2023, the new program features the creation of an Assistant Professorship in Jain Studies, an Assistant Professorship in the Ethics of Non-Violence, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Jain Studies. A group of Indian-origin Jain community philanthropists from the U.S. and U.K. made a gift of USD 1.5 million towards the establishment of the program. 

“The generosity of our donors means that we have the opportunity to establish a world-leading center of excellence in Jainism at the heart of one of the world’s most culturally and religiously diverse cities,” said Professor Charlotte Hempel, Head of the School of Philosophy, Theology, and Religion at the University of Birmingham.
