Four Indian-American Students Named College Sponsored National Merit Scholarship Winners

National Merit Scholarship Corporation is pleased to announce the College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship Winners for the college academic year beginning fall of 2023.
The winners include four Indian-American students, two from Las Vegas and Reno, respectively.
- Tharani Gunasseelan is graduating from Ed. W. Clark High School, Las Vegas, plans to pursue a career in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas.
- Sudipta Rout is also graduating from Ed. W. Clark High School, Las Vegas, plans to pursue a Bachelor in Economics from the University of Texas at Dallas.
- Archit S. Dash of Galena High School, Reno, will attend the University of Tulsa to pursue a career in Medicine.
- Riyaa Rajesh is also graduating from Galena High School, Reno, and plans to pursue a career in Medicine at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the Finalistsin the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
This year, 153 higher education institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. College-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners are a part of the distinguished group of more than 7,140 high school seniors who will receive National Merit Scholarships for college undergraduate study worth nearly $28 million.
Each Semifinalist was asked to submit a detailed scholarship application, which included writing an essay and providing information about extracurricular activities, awards, and leadership positions. Semifinalists also had to have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirmed the qualifying test performance. From the Semifinalist group, over 15,000 met requirements for Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will be Merit Scholarship winners in 2023.
