Like the Republicans, the Democrats Are In A Denial – Guest Author Nirmalya Chatterjee
We have all seen what happens as people get older. We have seen it in our parents and Grand Parents. Their minds and bodies become slower. They become less energetic. Memories begin to falter. Responses become weak. That’s what we saw in President Biden in the debate with the former President Trump. His performance made people’s fear even stronger that he is not fit to be the President for another four years. He appeared substantially weaker than 2020 when he won the Presidency. There have been reports that his condition has been deteriorating in the last few years. This fear is contributing to further erosion in his support, especially in the crucial six battle ground states where the next election will be essentially decided.
Polls have consistently shown that many of the independent voters do not like former President Trump. They are also alarmed by the prospect of his returning to the White House. Many of the Republican voters have been very uncomfortable if not suspicious of Mr. Trump. The strong support for former Governor Nikki Haley during the GOP primary, even after she ended her candidacy, was a testament to that. Nevertheless, the top ranking Republicans, many of who are very smart and well educated people, are in a complete denial about Mr. Trump. They have simply abandoned their own beliefs and identities and have joined the chorus in support of Mr. Trump.
President Biden and the leaders of the Democratic party have consistently warned the voters that this election will be perhaps one of the most consequential elections in our lifetime. They believe that the former President Trump’s past actions as well as the future promises will take the country further away from its democratic norms. Post debate, many are very alarmed that the recent polls show that the election is clearly heading towards President Biden losing handily. Moreover, these people also fear the negative impact on the ‘down ballots’, meaning the House and the Senate will also go against them along with the White House – a trifecta in governance.
Since President Biden’s poor debate performance, several Democratic leaders have started to voice their concerns on Mr. Biden’s ability to win the race. But, Mr. Biden is determined to continue to fight for his own candidacy no matter what people think of his mental & physical state or what the polls are suggesting. Yet, a vast majority of the Democratic leadership, at least in public, are firmly standing behind President Biden. They are also in a similar denial mode. They are not willing to confront President Biden with their concerns thereby potentially handing the election victory to Mr. Trump.
Long before the 2024 election cycle started, a sizable section of the voters were not interested in either candidate. They wanted a change. They wanted new ideas, and promises for a better future. The country is now in a total quandary.

Thank you for your request. I think people are all too familiar with Mr. Trump’s actions. Unfortunately, many are in total denial.
Amazing that those that normalize hate, violence, personal dishonesty and abuse of the law also claim to be experts at truth telling and denial.

I Congratulate you and appreciate taking time to give a very clear description of the current situation. I hope and trust that President Biden yields the leadership to the next generation of leaders, although he lead our country to great heights domestically and internationally.
What I do not understand is how so many people, including some of our own community, follow Trump blindly when he is a such a lier, cheat and a convicted criminal. I am just amazed and really curious to learn this parade of people including tech icons Elon Musk, Jamie Dimon and many Silicon Valley enterprenuers are behind Trump!

I will offer my own personal view on Mr. Trump’s strong following. He has captured the hearts and minds of millions of middle class Americans on his argument that they have been neglected in the past several decades by the political leaders as millions of jobs were shipped abroad causing their steady economic decline. He very effectively capitalized the hot button border crisis. His ‘America First’ slogan captured the emotion of many. The wealthy of course love his gift of tax cuts. And, the last few years’ very high inflation caused primarily by the pandemic has played into his hands.
And, the wealthy love the gift of his tax cuts.
Mr. Trump is undoubtedly a very strong and persuasive communicator who often uses misleading & incorrect facts in his arguments. And, many of his acts are unprecedented and should be considered totally unacceptable for a President. Yet, no one in either party has been able to effectively counter his arguments and make a serious dent in his following. And, now with the current chaos in the Democratic party, the stars are getting well aligned for him to become an even more formidable leader!
